Kweichow Moutai is one of China’s most prestigious baijiu brands and a benchmark expression of sauce aroma baijiu, also known as jiangxiang baijiu. Produced in the town of Maotai in Guizhou Province, this iconic Chinese spirit is closely associated with premium gifting, business banquets, festive celebrations and collector demand.

Moutai is made from red sorghum, wheat-based qu and water from the Chishui River. It is produced using traditional Chinese fermentation, distillation and ageing methods, creating a distinctive profile that is very different from whisky, cognac or wine. Instead of typical fruity or smoky notes, Kweichow Moutai is known for its bold savoury, grainy, nutty, umami and sauce-like aroma.

Often called China’s “national liquor,” Moutai has a long-standing reputation as a prestigious baijiu served at important banquets and used as a premium gift. Christie’s notes that Kweichow Moutai has been served at Chinese state banquets and presented as a diplomatic gift, highlighting its cultural and collectible importance.
